Woodenhead 2020 Zinfandel, Mariah Vineyard, Mendocino Ridge
Woodenhead 2020 Zinfandel, Mariah Vineyard, Mendocino Ridge
Sold out.
I always anticipate the delivery of this mountain fruit from the wilds of the Mendocino Ridge appellation. A tough place to farm and grow grapes. 2400’ in elevation, probably the highest
grown Zinfandel in Mendocino County.
Dark purple in the glass and I do mean dark. Aromatically very berry in the black fruit spectrum, with brambly woodsy notes and blood orange zest. Also smells like the forest of Douglas Fir, madrone and tan oak that surround the vineyard. Fresh. The palate is bold, mouth filling and juicy. Blackberry, mulberry herbal notes of sage and thyme. Moderate tannins give it some “grip”. I venture to say not for the weak although the alcohol this vintage is reasonable at 14.5%. This wine is not for the meek, but for the bawdy. For meat lovers especially, on the outdoor grill crowd, this is your kind of wine. Rosemary grilled ribeye with a gorgonzola butter and you’re in Heaven!
Should age nicely but drinking well now.
