Woodenhead 2014 Pinot Noir, Kent Berry Vineyard, Santa Cruz Mountains
Woodenhead 2014 Pinot Noir, Kent Berry Vineyard, Santa Cruz Mountains
Sold out.
One thing about the Santa Cruz Mountain appellation is its diversity, from near the coast to the summit of the mountains, from the chaparral to the trees. Unique is the word. Stylistically, these wines are light and lean, highly perfumed and complex. A Pinot Noir aficionado’s delight!
In color, the wine is clear, ruby bright and translucent. The aromatics are moderate to highly perfumed with red fruits dominating. There are floral notes of rose, orange peel, and spice, and mineral tones of slate. The palate is dry and flinty, with a medium-plus tannin level and high acidity. This is a mountain wine for sure, with earth characteristics. Planted by David Bruce and Martin Ray at an elevation of 2,100 feet, it’s one of a kind and shows you what Pinot Noir in a different kind of terroir can do. This wine should age well and reward even more with time. Try decanting. Pair it with butternut squash soup with curry and ginger!
