History
Most of the vineyard was planted in 1947 (Carignane, Charbono, Zinfandel) by Guido Venturi. Gary is now the vineyard owner/manager extraordinaire. The North Hill was actually planted in 1929 by Guido’s parents, Elisco and Laudomia. It was planted to Burger on St. George rootstock and was sold to Weibel for their “Green Hungarian,” in about 1978. It was Gary who budded over the Burger to Zinfandel on the North Hill.
Tasting notes
Dark, soulful ruby, aromas of woody blackberry bramble, sage, tobacco, a hint of leather, and a tone of plum. As it opens, more blackberry, mulberry, and black plum. The palate reveals a forward spiciness akin to only Zinfandel—dark and brooding, big flavors. Grounded in earth and herbs, with a dark fruit core surrounding a considerably enormous wine. Not for the faint of heart. For the real Zin afficionado—OMG!!! The weight and flavor of this wine just bursts upon the palate. This is one for the cellar, made for the long run but totally approachable now. Finishes gently and almost sweet with supple moderate tannins. Serve with spaghetti and meatballs in a hearty tomato sauce.
