2010 Pinot Noir, Mendocino Ridge

2010 Pinot Noir, Mendocino Ridge

From a new/old vineyard for us, the Valenti Vineyard is located on Greenwood Ridge Road above the Anderson Valley. This portion of the vineyard used to be Zinfandel (we did produce one Zinfandel vintage from this site), but because of ripening issues for Zin on this mountain ridge, it was budded over to pinot noir. I’m happy to say that 1/3 of the bud stock came from the Morning Dew Ranch (Burt Williams’ vineyard) from the valley below. Originally, this Pommard clone came from the Rochioli vineyard in Russian River Valley. Although it’s the first crop from these vines, it shows potential in this terroir, mountain fruit, and 1200’ elevation. I’m very interested in this part of the territory as I think the vines age, they will produce spectacular wines.

Medium deep ruby in color, earthy, Burgundian, some toastiness and brushy woodiness reminiscent of the Manzanita close by. Definitely in the red fruit spectrum with a whisper of flowers. The palate consists of firm red fruits, cranberry, red raspberry, apple skin, rosehips and a woodiness suggesting its mountain origin. Pinot noir for sure. A medium tannin structure that gives it grip and texture, suggesting some aging potential. A wine that will drink well now or cellar for a couple of years. Enjoy this wine with cheese such as Point Reyes Toma, or perhaps a nicely ripened Epoisses.

2010 Zinfandel, Bertoli Vineyard, Leras Ranches, RRV

2010 Zinfandel, Bertoli Vineyard, Leras Ranches, RRV

This vineyard, originally owned by the Bertoli Family, was planted sometime between the late 30’s and early 40’s, making it approximately 70 years old.  Nick Leras is the current owner and both farms and manages the vineyard.   Mr. Leras is a famous and savvy Russian River Valley winegrower who has been farming these parts for many a decade.  The vineyard is head-trained and completely dry-farmed and the soil is primarily dark clay loam.

The wine has a beautiful crimson hue.  Effusive and jumping out of the glass, this Zinfandel demonstrates a rather evolved aromatic complexity, which touches on herbs, spice and fruit.  Aromas include lavender, rose, licorice, with a hint of black pepper and of course berries (more like boysenberry pie!).  A bright and opulent mouth-feel.   The acidity carries through the wine bringing fruit and spice to the forefront, while the mild tannins in the background complete the palette experience.

The essence of this wine is boysenberries, which I didn’t realize are a hybrid of the European Raspberry, the common blackberry and the Loganberry.   A complete medium bodied Zin that’s fun and will bring enjoyment to those who appreciate the fruit and spice spectrum. Try with barbeque sausage, or Spanish Albondigas.  Enjoy!

Perfume of white blossoms, elderflower, and lemon crème brulee.  Highly Aromatic.  Flavors of green pippin apples, kiwis and gooseberries with a slight minerality.  Very long lasting lemony finish- tart and snappy with an acidic backbone that’s refreshing.  This wine has edge!  Drink it ice cold with oysters that are chilled plain or with a nice mignonette.  Fresh cracked crab with drawn butter works too!  A coastal day’s perfect wine.

2009 Pinot Noir, Buena Tierra Vineyard, RRV

A beautifully perfumed nose of red and purple garden flowers: roses, carnations, and wild herbal notes. Sour cherry, the river in the evening, and a kind of wildness - all give it that Burgundian air. Lovely deep garnet in color, flavors of strawberry jam, rhubarb, and spices framed by subtle oak notes. Soft and graceful, yet with plenty of inner strength. Cherry, forest floor and more. One of the more concentrated Buena Tierras I've made (the other was in 2003). This one is perhaps the best one yet. Balanced and beautiful, a wine that is contemplative, silky and seductive. With a history at our winery, it speaks for itself. Try it with an Asian star anise duck recipe. BEST OF CLASS 2012 SONOMA COUNTY HARVEST FAIR!

2009 Pinot Noir, Cameron Vineyard, RRV

Dark ruby in color with aromas of black stone fruit, light toastiness, cedar, violets and honeyed blackberries, musk rose and an earthiness too. Flavors of black fruit, mulberry, a masculine sort of feel, mouth filling, a meaty medium grain tannin all framed by an earthiness that is not devoid of fruit, nice length. But the fruit, ah, it's a mystery. Finishes wet and dry, the palete wanting and waiting for more. Complex may be the word. Drink now or cellar for a few years.

2009 Zinfandel, Guido Venturi Vineyard, Mendocino County

Very deep red, subdued nose initially, grows in glass. Black cherries, plums, and sage with woody brambly undertones, followed by a bright muscular and dusty kind of mouth feel with plenty of structure. Black tea and black fruit flavors with just a touch of spice, a nice juiciness and rusticity. Medium tannin that gives the wine meatiness. Will cellar well or, of course, drink it now. Try it with your favorite cut of steak nicely charred over a wood-fired bbq.

2009 Zinfandel, Braccialini Vineyard, Alexander Valley

Bright and dark ruby in color with aromas of briar, tobacco, and brandied black fruit with a hint of older oak. Black plum flavors with sage and black and white pepper notes. Earthy and full, with a tannin understructure that hints at a black tea component. Full and pleasureable. Very broad with plenty of muscle, juiciness and silk. Still evolving. Should cellar well, drinking window through 2015. Or, drink now, of course.

2009 Carignane, Mendocino County

A dark, dark red and perhaps mauve in color.  Old vines, 70 years plus, from the Guido Venturi property in Calpella..  Magnificent in form, 7 foot high trunks that are 10” in diameter.  This wine is simply spectacular; my second attempt at this varietal.  Dark brooding aromas of black fruit, mulberry, plum, toasty oak and spice.  Flavors of blackberry, a little pomegranate, sage and dusty earth. Mouth coating!  Moderate tannins, but refined.  Great grip and structure.  Enjoy with a pepperoni pizza or pasta pesto!

2009 Syrah, Russian River Valley

Dark purple in color with aromas of black fruit, dried plums, and crushed fresh huckleberries (actually color matches the crushed huckleberries too)!  A dark earth and mushroom component on the nose as well.  A blast on the palate of boysenberries, huckleberries, and plums followed by a dark and toasty oak which rounds out this big wine.  Mouth filling, massive with plenty of grip.  Age it a while if you can wait.  Serve with steak with gorgonzola sauce or spaghetti in a hearty red sauce or wild game boar, venison, etc.

Aromatics of white blossoms, elderflower, guava and yeast, backed by chalky flint like notes with a little brininess reminiscent of the sea. Palate of tangerine rind, lemon, green apple and kiwi flavors anchored by a minerality. Tart and racy, my personal favorite with raw oysters.

2008 Pinot Noir, Buena Tierra Vineyard, Russian River Valley

2008 Pinot Noir, Buena Tierra Vineyard, Russian River Valley

A medium garnet to ruby color, sweet caramelized and toasty oak armoas, bouquet of cherry blossoms and strawberries, with a light mushroom component. Smooth entry on the palate with smoky cherries, black raspberries, and jasmine tea. A hint of spice drawn from the stems of select whole clusters. Creamy and long, elegant and sophisticated, she will gain complexity with age. A midsummer's night dream with your favorite lover. A fitting successor to the 2007 "Pinot Cup" winner. Alas, this writing in 2011, look like the last (sob) vintage for this vineyard designate. The vineyard is dying out due to phylloxera. Drink up, make love, and enjoy!

2008 Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley

2008 Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley

Medium to light ruby red in color, aromas of ripe warm red raspberries, soft mint sarsaparilla and subtle violets.  A bolder version than the ‘07 for sure with more moderate tannins and a little toasty oak, bursting with stone fruit flavors of cherries and red plums, with spices reminiscent of cardamom and perhaps white pepper with a licorice back.  Food friendly acidity.  Our flagship wine representing true Russian River Valley flavors at a reasonable price.  A year or two of bottle age will bring forth more refinement, but why wait?  Enjoy it with a duck breast or lamb sausage now!

2008 Pinot Noir, Humboldt County

Big and exuberant, this dark garnet beauty commands attention with aromas of violets, rose petals, Lady Slipper orchids, damp forest and dark fruit. On the palate, it gushes with racy, highly extracted flavors that suggest bing cherries, pomegranates, Sen-Sen and dark plums, all within a cola framework. The finish lingers, offering up hints of mocha, with a slightly tart rhubarb pie finale. Bring this big boy Pinot along for a wild game feast and it will not disappoint.

This dark ruby red Zin has aromas of warm Asian spices, licorice, and red berry pie. Fruity on the palate, the flavors of red raspberries, plums and cherries dominate, followed by briar and cedar notes. Not a heavy wine, but bright with a lovely acidity making it light on it's feet. A medium tannin that is food friendly. Not in the "monster" category of Zins. Bison burgers to BBQ chicken fits the bill perfectly. A Zin you can swill. A leaner wine at a leaner price. Enjoy!

2008 Methode Champenoise Sparkling Wine, Russian River Valley

Pale gold in color, the mousse is fine beaded and consistent. There are lovely aromas of yeasty bread dough and apples with a floral component and hints of seaborne brininess, kelp and ocean breezes. A mouthful of pear, guava, lemon rind, and pommelo is supported by a framework of minerality. The bubbly finishes long and lingering with a dose of apricot. A wine for caviar, crab, oysters, Porcini Carpaccio and sashimi.

Colors of dark ruby and red shadows. Sandalwood, lavender and pennyroyal inflections on the olfactory senses. Aromas of black tinged fruits with hints of black and green teas. Rich and structured mouthfeel with medium tannins, backbone without heaviness. Flavors of hibiscus, mulberry, cherry and pomegranate again with the complexities of black and green teas. Long and mystifying. Serve with tea smoked duck. Heaven!

27 year old clones of Pommard #5 and Mount Eden (Romanee Conti) #37. Old and venerable vines. Built to last and cellar well. Our next to last release of this California “Grand Cru” vineyard.

2007 Pinot Noir, Fruitland Ridge, Humboldt County

Pronounced dark ruby color, licorice, dark and brooding aromas of boysenberries, black fruits, black teas, and plums. Mouth-filling flavors of mulberries, plums, blackberries, damp earth, with a moderate tannin concentration – “a big boy.” It’s reminiscent of some Oregon Pinot Noirs. Pair this with savory wild game dishes.

Those of you who go back a ways with us may remember the great Elk Prairie designate wines that we produced. Well, this wine is from the original budwood from that vineyard, Martini Clones 13 and 15. Alas, this will be the last of this designation as well. This fruit is separated from the regular Humboldt County appellation wine and bottled as a designate for its Martini Clone character.

This is the one that took the Pinot Cup at Charlie Palmer's Pigs and Pinot event here in March. Now you can experience this wine for yourself, but it's still a puppy, so drink one now and put one down for the holidays or beyond. Bright ruby red cherries, raspberries and light toasting with a faint mushroom component are evident on the nose. A mouthful of bing cherries galore on the palate exploding and gushing in the mouth and on the tongue, a veritable July 4th panorama of juiciness that makes your palate want more. Cardamom spice and green tea notes too. The wine is young and evolving, cellar time will develop its complexity. Now you know what all the hullabaloo is about.

2006 Pinot Noir, "Troika", Barrel Select Reserve

Comprised of three of his best barrels of wine, made by three of of the best French cooperages, and three of his finest vineyard sources, owner/winemaker Nikolai Stez blended three wines of the 2006 vintage -- Buena Tierra Vineyard in Russian River Valley, Wiley Vineyard from Anderson Valley, and Fruitland Ridge Humboldt County. This stunning and sumptuous medium ruby result is racy, sophisticated and rich. Beginning with a nose of raspberries, dark cherries and intensely perfumed musk rose and lavender, a touch of redwood earthiness follows with hints of mocha, cola and pennyroyal. The plush and luxuriant oak frames the magnificant flavors of cherries, pomegranate, black tea, raspberries, cassis and forest floor. Moderate fine grain tannins with a juicy mouth feel frame the finish. Opulent and sexy, not for the faint of heart. Troika's bold exuberance suggests a benefit from cellaring. Those who wait will experience depth and complexity in the already long lingering finish. Built to last. A rarified experience. The pinnacle of Nick's Pinot Noir production. Cheers and enjoy!

Arguably the darkest Zin yet from this family-farmed vineyard, the '07 continues to evolve, offering up aromas of currants, cedar, dark plums and rose petals. Dark fruit flavors dominate the palate, with notes of rhubarb pie, caramel, ripe Satsuma plums and anisette. The finish is long and toungue coating.

2007 Redwood Red

2007 Redwood Red

The 2005 version of this blend, from 70-year-old vines, consisted primarily of an obscure grape known in California as Early Burgundy. The varietal is actually Abouriou, a blending grape from the Cotes du Marmandais in southwest France. Other varietals in this old patch are, in descending order, Zinfandel, Carignane and Barbera. The result was a wine that was reminiscent of a Valpolicella Classico. In this version, Nick added a smidgeon of Petite Sirah, which provides structure and "bones." The result can be summed up in one word: baddaboom! This is a very sophisticated, dark garnet wine with an inviting nose of cherry blossoms, blackberry pie, dark stone fruits and fresh mushrooms. Typical of Abouriou, licorice-infused dark fruit flavors wrap around the tongue, unwinding on the dry, chalky finish with notes of cherry tart that cleanse the palate. Alcohol: 13%.

Nice flavors of black raspberry, root beer, pomegranate, nutmeg and cardamom co-mingle with pronounced complexity. What a mouthful! 2006 Zinfandel, Valenti Vineyard, Mendocino Ridge

A newcomer to the line-up, I'm excited about the Mendocino Ridge appellation. Historically there was Zin planted here on this ranch over 90 years ago. This vineyard in '06 however is only five years old but speaks of the possibilities it could bring. Sadly there will be no '07 vintage of this as it never fully ripened and was hit with bunch rot after the rains. Medium ruby color. Bouquet of lavender, blueberries, smoked meat with a hint of black pepper. Lovely. It rolls across the palate with grace and elegance. Blueberries, blackberries, plums and pepper. Definitely in the black fruit realm. Finishes earthy, long and focused. Great things to come.

A medium ruby color. Notable for this vintage is the lower alcohol. I pulled the trigger so to speak before we got a rain. I am not sorry. Typical Braccialini, a complex constellation of aromas - smoke, brandied cherries, anisette, and briar. Nicely integrated oak, pomegranate and cranberry flavors and a boxful of red Winesap apples with a carry thru of brandied cherries. Still a bit tightly wound, but should develop nicely in bottle in the next few months. Complexities galore that will become self evident with time. Mid palate is expansive and the finish is long with medium tannins.

From a 100+ year old heritage vineyard. Medium-dark ruby. A powerhouse that offers a bouquet of blackberries and perhaps black raspberries with a kind of bramble thicket nose. More cherries, cedar, tobacco and earth to follow. Complex bouquet. Juicy and rich with cranberry, elderberry, huckleberry, chocolate and white pepper. Should I go on? Great natural acidity. Expansive mid-palate is reminiscent of some fine Italian wines, maybe a high end Barolo? Finishes bright and earthy, with some hints of minerals and sage. Medium tannin. This is just going to get better. I suggest decanting. Serve with duck breast with a cherry port sauce or filet mignon with demiglace, smothered in morels. Definitely a food wine. Flavors of red raspberry and strawberry give the wine a kirsch-like viscosity with complex notes of sour cherry and pomegranate with a hint of green tea; medium tannins and excellent balance." -- Steve Pitcher, Wine News, August/September 2005

Dark cherry, pepper, Asian five spice, blackberry and mushroom forest floor with toasty oak aromatics. Bright red and black fruit flavors: cherry, black cherry, blackberry, along with licorice, cola and a hint of mint. Very juicy with moderate tannins. Good acidity, good structure, and a rich, juicy finish.

2003 Pinot Noir, Humboldt County

2003 Pinot Noir, Humboldt County

"Humboldt County, CA may not be a celebrated wine region, but this delicious Pinot Noir should put it on the map. Its bold, spicy perfume suggests berries and forest floor. The palate that follows is supple and elegant with gentle tannins wrapped around rich black cherry fruit. The finish is of moderate length and quite gratifying. A labor of love from a small one-man, one-woman North Coast winery, and it shows." -- Dan Friedman, NYC Wine Report, October 3, 2005

Medium ruby in color. Bouquet of raspberry, deep dark cherry, some coffee followed by a hint of smoke. A mouthful of juiciness, with raspberry, blueberry, Oriental spices, clove, anise and vanilla. Medium tannin and medium to full body with the trademarked elegance of our wines. Very pleasant. Drink now to 1-2 years.

2003 Zinfandel, Martinelli Road Old Vine, Russian River Valley

Dark ruby color. Floral bouquet of violets and mystery perfume that speaks something different to everyone who smells it. (It's the terroir!) Mouthfuls of huckleberry, perhaps huckleberry pie, white pepper, a hint of chocolate and toastiness. Rich, juicy, moderate tannin, long finish. Absolutely delicious! Will live a long time. Drinking window (now if you must) or anywhere from 1-15 years would be my guess. A classic!

Dark ruby-purple, smells of spice, boysenberry and earth. Boysenberry to blackberry fruit flavors on the palate with distinct redwood forest floor-like flavors bordered with Chinese spices. Warm, full bodied and fleshy. Not extremely complex but not singular either. Medium tannin with good richness. The earthiest of my wines. A good value.

Ruby in color, aromas of black cherry, root beer and cola, spice and smoke. Deep red fruit flavors. Again, black cherry, cranberry, raspberry, pomegranate and some licorice. Stony-chalky, moderate tannins on the finish with nice complexity and tight structure will make this age beautifully.

2002 Pacini Vineyard Zinfandel, Mendocino County

A Mendocino Heritage vineyard. Light to medium ruby, chocolate and berry upon entry, soft and briary, some cherry, plum, raspberry spice, creamy, sweet, mildly tannic, good weight, and nice body. Spicy cedar, briary tobacco and earth on the finish, bringing to mind blackberry thicket green on the palate (if you can imagine this). Will drink well on release, should evolve more within 6-12 months, but should be consumed in 1 - 3 years. Enjoy!

2002 Braccialini Vineyards Zinfandel, Alexander Valley

Vibrant and bright medium ruby filled with dark loganberry, black raspberry and spice bouquet. Round, brandied cherry, sweet red licorice and a hint of anise, mouth filling on the palate. One of the most focused Braccialini Zins I've made. A young wine that will develop real nicely as you Brac fans know. Consume in 1 - 5 years. Cheers!

2002 Martinelli Road Old Vine Zinfandel, Russian River Valley

2002 Martinelli Road Old Vine Zinfandel, Russian River Valley

Medium to dark ruby, wild blackberry blossoms on the nose, sweet black cherry, hints of dark licorice spice, earth and a hint of framboise on the palate. Powerful, unmistakable terroir; full body, rich, moderate tannin, long mid palate makes it's way to a long licorice-cedar coddled in earth like finish. Big, rich, wild and waiting. Young, while being venerable, history in the bottle (if only vines could talk). Probably a year away from showing all, but if you must, you can coax this one in 6-8 months, but for full effect, consume from 1 - 10+ years. Sante!

A note on my notes, I write these descriptors at the time of release, when you taste these wines, you'll probably taste other things as these wines continue to change and evolve. Hold these notes only as far as you can throw them, the wine plays by its own rules. Everything is released unfined and unfiltered. Sediment does accumulate with age. Stand up these bottles a day before opening, if you can. Enjoy the power, the beauty and the elegance of these wines as I do.

Cheers, Nikolai
